Nutri-Rice for Better Diets and Nutrition

AfricaRice pursues a systems-driven innovation that re-engineers this staple crop into a functional food that delivers essential micronutrients—iron, zinc, calcium, folate, and vitamins A and B, while lowering its glycemic index.

Nutri-Rice for Better Diets and Nutrition

Africa is facing a rapidly escalating nutrition crisis. Nearly 31% of children under five are stunted, 40% of women of reproductive age suffer from iron-deficiency anemia, and rising rates of overweight, obesity, and diabetes reflect growing overnutrition challenges. Simultaneously, rice consumption has soared, especially in urban areas where per capita intake exceeds 100 kg annually. As rice is calorie-dense and nutrient-poor, AfricaRice can cease transformative opportunity to improve health outcomes.

AfricaRice pursues a systems-driven innovation that re-engineers this staple crop into a functional food that delivers essential micronutrients—iron, zinc, calcium, folate, and vitamins A and B, while lowering its glycemic index. This addresses the dual challenge of undernutrition and metabolic disease.

Our multi-pronged approach integrates four complementary strategies:

  • Biofortification: AfricaRice has identified landraces rich in iron, zinc, and protein. Through conventional and molecular breeding, we develop rice varieties with enhanced iron, zinc, and folate levels.
  • Agronomic biofortification: By applying micronutrient-rich inputs—such as zinc sulfate foliar sprays and gypsum for calcium, grain mineral concentrations and nutrient bioavailability is improved.
  • Parboiling: We enhance rice with iron, zinc, folic acid, and β-carotene by soaking in fortified solutions followed by parboiling. This retains up to 81% of added nutrients and reduces glycemic response. Parboiling improves the physical and nutritional quality of rice compared to its non-parboiled counterpart.
  • Blending fortified premixes: Fortified rice kernels containing iron, zinc, folic acid, and vitamins A and B12 can be blended with milled rice enabling it to provide the daily requirement for these nutrients. This is ideal for institutional feeding programs and commercial retail channels.

Nutri-Rice fits seamlessly into African diets, making it suitable for school meals, healthcare institutions, safety nets, and open markets. With targeted investment, AfricaRice is ready to scale Nutri-Rice through regional hubs, public-private partnerships, and policy integration.
